The short story, An Ancient Cat Speaks, was a bit of a treat for me.
I love hearing about other cultures or ways of life. That's part of what drew me to Warriors in the first place. But even more than that, I love hearing about older cultures, ones that have ceased to exist, including imaginary ones.
When I was younger, I was fascinated with Ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece. I loved learning about how they lived and thinking about how it was similar or different from my own life.
I also loved reading their legends and learning all about their religions and beliefs. I can still recall a lot about the ancient Egyptian gods, which were some of my favorites to read about.
When I went on a trip overseas to Cambodia and Lao in grade ten for International Studies, some of my favorite days were those going to Angkor Wat and some other old temples. Seeing the modern temples were also fun, but the older ones drew me in more.
This short story looks at what life was like around the lake living in the tribes. It doesn't go into much detail, and some of the things it mentions conflict slightly with what we see of the ancient cats in The Power of Three arc. It's also fictional. But I still really enjoyed it for what it was.
The central theme in An Ancient Cat Speaks societies' structure. Throughout history, societies form in the same place a previous one disappeared from many years ago. The new community often has no knowledge of the previous one. It's interesting to look at the different cultures that evolved in the same place. Rock talks about the new cats who settled by the lakeshore and compared them to his kin's community. He notes the number of groups both are divided into and their differing leadership structure. However, the medicine cats share with their ancestors in the same place he and the other healers did long ago.
The main character in the short story is Rock. He tells the story, recounting how times were when he lived by the lakeshore with his kin, in their three tribes. He compares this to the way he sees the modern Clan cats living now. No other characters are specified in An Ancient Cat Speaks, so Rock is the only main character.
The short story's main situations are as follows: Rock introduces himself and explains he used to live with his kin by the lakeshore. He describes the differences between them and the cats currently living there. He recounts how the healers used to visit the Moonpool the Clans have found. He remembers journeying to the Moonpool, and where it was in its hollow. He recounts what it was like to go there and take part in the rituals in his kin's time. He finishes by saying he is joyful that new cats visit the Moonpool and hopes it will help them for a long time.
Thank you so much for reading. I love all of you.
Although I'm enjoying rereading these short stories I'm going to do something different for a bit. I'll come back and finish them of course, but I just got the most recent book in The Broken Code Arc.
The next three posts will be on books two to four in The Broken Code arc. I've already done book one. Hope you enjoy the change of pace.
