It can also help you change the way your different characters speak from each other. You should, however, be careful with the synonyms you choose. If you choose the wrong one, you can completely change the meaning behind a line or paragraph. A good rule of thumb is to keep a dictionary handy along with your thesaurus to double-check any words you don't commonly use.
