My Only Hope - Summary

Honestly, I'm not sure how I feel about My Only Hope.

It's the story about Daisy leaving to find the Clans. In the books, this action brings the new role of a permanent queen to ThunderClan: someone who keeps the nursery reading for any new queens and helps them care for their kits.

This is somewhat interesting, but she isn't a character I feel very engaged in in the main series. Her focus in this short story is actually more interesting.

You can tell by how young Daisy describes Floss's kits as being that they aren't going to a new home. When a series is focused on cats as the prominent 'people', it makes this awful to think of.

It's not that big of a deal compared to some other short stories, though. Daisy's struggle isn't as interesting as most, and when you don't know Floss's kits at all, there are none of the feelings you get with almost every other death in Warriors.

It has good points and does bring up emotions, but…yeah. I'm not sure if I like it or not.

What about you? What did you like or dislike about My Only Hope? Do you think it's a good story?

Below is the summary essay for My Only Hope.

The central theme in My Only Hope is desperation. Desperation affects people in different ways. The short story explores how some people can make rash decisions or cling to a belief they conjure in their minds. This belief can create certainty in their minds of what they must do, despite often not being based on evidence from reality. Daisy thought of running away to protect her kits. When the memory of the new cats came to her, she decided they were her only hope and was sure they would help and protect her and her kits.

There are two main characters in My Only Hope. The first is the protagonist, Daisy. The story is told in the first person, through her yeses, so she talks directly to the reader. The second is Floss, who acts as a catalyst. Her having her kits taken by the Nofurs and explaining this to Daisy causes her to experience desperation. Without this catalyst, Daisy would never decide she had to leave and would not be clinging to the belief that the cats by the lake would help her and her kits.

The main situations in the short story are as follows: Daisy searches for Floss's missing kits. Floss explains the Nofurs take their kits. Daisy wants to protect her kits. Floss acts nonchalant, but Daisy believes it's an act. Daisy decides she must leave to take her kits away from the Nofurs. Floss reminds Daisy she will not survive by herself. Daisy recalls some of the new cats and that some looked friendly. Despite Floss's warnings, Daisy is convinced they will help her. Daisy decides that though the outside is scary, the wild cats would protect her.
