I actually really enjoyed coming up with the summary essay for Journey’s End. I am surprised I didn’t start the essay on Tuesday, the day after I read it. I’m even more surprised I didn’t finish it after I got home, Wednesday evening.
The theme for this one is sitting right in front of you in the first sentence; perseverance. I really like this one because it’s different from many others presented in Warriors, but it is still essential.
When you think about it, much of what we have or can do today wouldn’t have happened otherwise. Perseverance is what progress and achievement are built on.
Anyway, I ended up putting it off and finished writing the essay tonight.
The central theme in the short story Journey’s End is perseverance. Having perseverance ensures many difficult but important tasks get done. It also gives people a strong want and drive to find a better way and make jobs easier. Tawnypelt shows her perseverance in the opening sentence, noting her tiredness whilst still following the others. All the cats want to continue and so venture onto the dangerous cliff edge. Feathertail’s will is shown in the last paragraph when she finds a better way down the cliff face to join her comrades.
Tawnypelt is the main protagonist. The short story is told in the first person through her eyes. As she often refers to the whole group through the use of we in most paragraphs, the other cats can also be thought of as main characters. There is only one minor character in Journey’s End. This is the badger Midnight, who is only mentioned briefly in the final paragraph, and doesn’t appear in the short story.
The main situations in Journey’s End follow. Tawnypelt explains her weariness. She mentions the smells and sounds. At the cliff top, she describes her awe at seeing the sea. The cats watch the sun set into the water. They walk along the cliff. Tawnypelt notes the frothing water she can see between cracks in the rock. She, Brambleclaw, and Squirrelpaw fall through one of these cracks. They swim against the water and onto dry ground, where they find themselves in the cave they were looking for. Feathertail uses a series of ledges along the cliff wall to get down to join them.
Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed it.
