A New Warrior - Summary Essay

Reading this short story reminded me of one of the things I love about this series. Many of the scenes and situations in Warriors are dark, yet the characters are still happy. They enjoy their lives immensely, despite all the difficulties. In some cases, it’s because of these difficulties.

I must say I was pretty happy to see that A New Warrior was more than one page long. I’ve discussed the difficulties with more concise short stories plenty in my other posts on the Warriors Field Guide: Secrets of the Clans.

I also really enjoyed seeing the old forest again. It may have only been a short story, but I know the setting so well, I was transported straight back there.

I think there’s a couple of reasons I liked this. Firstly, it’s nice to change things up a bit. That’s obvious. The last few short stories were set around the lake.

The following reason is the quality of the stories that were already set there. You don’t have to look far in the fandom to find plenty of high praise for the original series. The writing was superb and still quite gripping once you know the story.

I think it’s also nostalgia. When I finally picked up Into The Wild, I quickly fell in love with the characters and the series. I can remember the excitement and happiness I felt myself reading it. I have many memories connected to where I was and what I was doing while reading that arc.

What about you? Do you have anything you really like or don’t like about this short story?

I hope you enjoy hearing my thoughts on it in the summary essay below, and if you know anyone else who might like to read this, please share it.

The central theme in A New Warrior is joy. It is vital to feel joy in your life. Without this, life can feel meaningless, and people often become depressed. There are many things people can find joy in. Brackenfur feels pleasure when he is made a warrior. This is because of the support and love he feels and his pride in his choices and actions. His faith in StarClan causes him to feel happy watching Silverpelt. He feels joy mentoring Whitepaw as they are protecting and providing for the Clan. He also feels excitement at the prospect of her becoming a warrior.

There is only one main character in A New Warrior. This is the protagonist, Brakenfur. Brakenfur tells the short story directly to the reader, as it is written in the first person. Although he names several other characters, none of them are among the main characters themselves. They are all only mentioned in one or two paragraphs in A New Warrior each. The short story doesn’t really have an antagonist. These are all the main characters that appear during the telling of A New Warrior.

The main situations are summarised here. Brakenfur goes hunting with Fireheart and smells WindClan and ShadowClan. Brakenfur goes on to explain why the other Clans are attacking. He runs back to warn the camp and defends Brokentail from the vengeful Clans in the battle. Afterwards, Bluestar made him a warrior. He feels the Clan’s love and support. Then he sat in silent vigil, guarding the camp. Brakenfur is made Whitepaw’s mentor. He talks about patrolling and hunting with her and teaching her to climb and jump. Brakenfur explains he is excited to see Whitepaw become a warrior.
