How StarClan Gave us a New Gathering Place - Summary Essay

Really sorry this is a bit late.

Yesterday, shortly after I’d finished work at my other job from home, our internet just stopped. Not sure exactly what the issue was, but my phone, iPad, computer, and Apple TV couldn’t connect.

The signal was there. The three-bar wifi symbol was full. Anything that used the internet either wouldn’t load, or the scrolling circle would stay there for several minutes before telling us to check our connection.

Usual disconnect and reconnect did nothing. Same with turning the modem off and on again. The landline phone was fine, so it wasn’t a physical problem.

Anyway, after an afternoon and day of doing what I could offline, we finally got the connection back.

This particular short story was a little difficult for me to come up with a theme for. It was there. I knew there was something.

After a few days, I settled on ‘faith’ but still wasn’t quite sure how to explain it. I was thinking maybe explaining how StarClan knew the purpose of the Island. How they weren’t concerned about RiverClan taking the Island because they knew Leopardstar was reasonable or something.

The short story doesn’t really say that, though. Let me know what you think of what I’ve come up with below. I hope you enjoy it.

The central theme in How StarClan Gave us a New Gathering Place is faith. People with faith or religion will often place significance on objects or places they feel drawn to or are inclined to notice. It can be taken that God or faith is guiding them. Dustpelt remembers seeing the Island when he first arrived at the lake and felt the need to tell Ferncloud. Hawkfrost may have noticed its significance when he suggested RiverClan take it. Its importance was found when a tree from it killed Mudclaw and gave the cats a way to get to the Island for Gatherings.

The main character in How StarClan Gave us a New Gathering Place is the protagonist, Dustpelt. He is the one who is telling the story, in the first person, directly to the reader. Hawkfrost is the main antagonist but is not the main character. Although taking the Island for RiverClan alone would have caused a large problem, it is only mentioned at the beginning of one paragraph. It is resolved by StarClan at the end of the same paragraph. All the other characters mentioned in the short story play only minor or incidental roles.

The main situations in How StarClan Gave us a New Gathering Place follow. The first thing Dustpelt noticed was the Island. Hawkfrost suggested it should be the RiverClan camp, but StarClan wanted it to be for Gatherings. Mudclaw tried to take leadership of WindClan. He was chased off to the lakeshore, and a tree falling from the Island crushed him. The tree also gave the Clans a way to get to the Island for Gatherings. The Gathering takes place on the Island every full moon. The leaders it in a tree, with their deputies on its roots. The Island now belongs to all the Clans.
