This story didn't really grab me. I don't know why, but I never really felt anything with Brightheart at this point during the series. I couldn't really feel much more emotion reading this version either.
I guess it was interesting seeing it through her eyes. And the first person telling meant felt a little more real, but it still wasn't much.
Do any of you connect with Brightheart when hearing about the battle with the dogs after she first wakes up? Why? I'd really like to know which parts of this story struck a chord with others. Let me know in the comments.
The central theme in The Death of Swiftpaw is pride. Generally, there is nothing wrong with feeling pride in your skills and accomplishments. However, pride can lead people to be reckless, especially when others don't show the same pride in them. It can also make you unwilling to back down or seem weak in an impossible situation. Brightheart feels pride in her and the other apprentices' skills. This pride leads her to go along with Swiftpaw, though neither knows what they'll find. Swiftpaw is driven by pride to turn around and fight the dogs, and he pays with his life.
The main characters in the short story are the two protagonists., Swiftpaw and Brightheart. Brightheart tells the tale in the first person, so everything is seen from her perspective. Swiftpaw drives the story by making decisions and acting to try and get them what they both want, recognition and their warrior names. All the other characters in The Death of Swiftpaw do not play large enough roles to be considered more than minor or incidental.
The main situations in the story follow: Swiftpaw gets an idea to get Bluestar to make all the other apprentices warriors. Brightheart and Swiftpaw try the plan and are attacked by dogs. Brightheart is winded, and blood covers her eyes so she can only hear fighting. Swiftpaw died, and she passed out. She wakes up in Cinderpelt's den with Cloudtail by her side. Brightheart learns she lost an eye, and she wishes she died fighting the dogs. Bluestar gives her the warrior name Lostface. Cloudtail comforts her, and she declares herself to be Brightheart, not Lostface.
