So, it's taking me a while to get through each of these Super Editions. I hope this reaches you before midnight just as the clock ticks over to Sunday. They are longer books, and everyone being home most of the time means there's less of a chance for quiet. Oh well.
Anyway, I hope this Tallstar's Revenge post was worth the wait.
I originally bought this in ebook form for my kindle. I read it a couple of times on there. It's a good story and had some great scenes, but it's probably close to my least favourite super edition out of the ones I own. It's above SkyClan's Destiny, and, to a lesser extent, Hawking's Journey.
I also own Tigerheart's Shadow, but I haven't read it yet, and I've got Squirrelflight's Hope coming in the mail, so we'll see how they measure up soon.
Tallstar's Revenge is not really slow like Mothflight's Vision, but it's not a particularly fast read either.
I got a physical copy because I like holding books. It just feels so lovely in your hands. Plus now I get to experience the warriors' book smell with it.
Some people might notice that hardcovers and paperbacks smell different (and I obviously got the hardcover for a super edition). Still, not many people know that the content of a book actually gives it a particular smell. These days when I'm in the library, I barely look at the cover and choose books instead by their smell.
When you've stopped calling me weird, I know warriors books well enough that I can usually identify them instantly by smell alone. I've done it before when entering a new bookstore. A few brief sniffs and I can make a beeline to the correct section of the shelves to see if they've got any books in the series I don't have, so it's real.
On Tallstar's Revenge, I love Tallstar and Jake, but who doesn't. I think I like them a bit more than Ravenpaw and Barley. As for Leafpool, I never sensed a particularly secure connection between Mothwing and our possibly-bi ThunderClan cat. Tall x Jake is my OTP.
As I said, I got the hardcover copy for the picture under the dustcover. Taking it off the day I got the book, my voice rose several octaves, and some words left my mouth without my knowledge: "Oh my beautiful boy!" I have never said that before or since. Luckily, my voice was so high no-one could understand me though.
A lot happens in this book. I remembered Sandgorse dying, Talltail deciding to he wanted to be a tunneller, going after Sparrow, meeting Jake, and finally, letting Sparrow live. Shrewpaw's teasing I mostly forgot, along with everything else that happened before!
It was good to reread it all. It really seems like too much for one book. How much did you remember (before reading this post of course)? Have you seen the illustration under the dust cover on a hardcover copy? What did you think? Let me know by leaving a comment on here or on social media.
Now, here is the summary essay for the suer edition, Tallstar's Revenge.
Tallstar's Revenge looks at believing the worst of others. We look for people to blame when we are unhappy. We see these people in a negative light and can invent flaws that might have lead to our unhappiness. This can hurt your relationship with these people and others. Tallpaw blames his unhappiness on Palebird's distantness and Shrewpaw's teasing. He doesn't realise his mothers' condition, or that the teasing is meant to be a joke. He blames Sparrow when he feels pain at Sandgorse's death. Later he learns that Sandgorse sacrificed himself to save Sparrow.
The main character in the book is called Talltail. He is the protagonist, whose eyes the reader sees the world and story through. Yet, through his beliefs about others and the world around him, he is also the main antagonist, causing problems and obstacles he must overcome. The other antagonists in the story are minor, as are the several supporting characters, including Barkface, Dawnstripe, and Heatherstar. All the other characters that appear in Tallstar's Revenge are minor also or incidental.
The central situations in the book follow. Tallkit doesn't want to become a tunneller and is relieved when Heatherstar makes him a moor runner. When doing tunnel training, Tallpaw almost drowns. Rouges spend time in the Clan. Sandgorse is killed when a tunnel collapses and Tallpaw blames Sparrow, who was with him. Tallpaw wonders if his destiny lies outside the Clan. He sets out to kill Sparrow, and Jake joins him. Sparrow tells Talltail that Sandgorse saved him. Jake convinces Talltail to return to WindClan, and they part ways. Talltail is made Deadpaw's mentor. Talltail becomes the leader of WindClan.
Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed it.
