I remember when I first saw a copy of Moth Flight's Vision. It was sitting in the middle of all the other Warriors books the book store.
I already knew about Moth Flight from my e-book copy of Tallstar's Revenge. I had heard how much other people had enjoyed her super edition. I wanted to get it so badly, wanting to know more about the first medicine cat, and sure I would love it.
I also knew that each of the hardcover versions of the super editions had a double-page artwork on the actual cover beneath the dust cover. This one was a paperback, and I definitely wanted it in hardcover… I'll get a hardcover version of it in the future.
I was right about it being an exciting read and enjoying it, though. But Moth Flight's Vision is a slow book. I don't mean slowly paced. It's slow to read.
Most super editions that I find engaging I can read in a couple of days, maybe three if I have a lot of other things to do. But they way Moth Flight's Vision is written, it's hard to read quickly. It seems to make you slow down and savour each detail and moment.
I haven't picked the book up since I first read it, probably because of this slow reading pace. Of course, it's still engaging and a great read. I enjoyed it this time through all the same.
Here is the summary essay for Moth Flight's Vision.
The central theme in Moth Flight's Vision is learning from the past. We all have many experiences throughout our lifetimes that can help us make decisions in the future. We must remember what happens in our lives so that we can learn from it. Wind Runner and Goose Fur learn to trust Moth Flight's Visions when she is right several times. Moth Flight learns to trust her instincts when they lead her to the moonstone. When her commitment to being a medicine cat and her kits conflict, she realises that medicine cats can't have kits, and she has to give hers up.
There are three main characters in the book. The first is the protagonist, Moth Flight, who's journey, the reader follows in the story. There are two antagonists. Wind Runner is hard on Moth Flight when she seems to get distracted too quickly, and later, she and Clear Sky obsess over borders. This causes problems for the medicine cats and their clans, and, eventually, leads to a battle between WindClan and SkyClan. All the other characters that play a role in Moth Flight's Vision are minor or incidental concerning the plot.
The main situations are listed here: Moth Flight is shown to be unable to focus. She follows a moth and finds the moonstone. Moth Flight learns who the medicine cats will be, and tells the Clans. She and Micah travel to other Clans and fall in love with each other. Micah is killed when trying to retrieve sap for a sick WindClan cat. Moth Flight goes to ShadowClan while she is driving, but returns to her Clan when she learns she is having Micah's kits. Moth Flight is torn between her kits and medicine cat duties. StarClan cures Wind Runner and gives all the leaders nine lives. Moth Flight gives up her kits to the other Clans and creates the rule that medicine cats can't have kits.
