Moonrise is probably my favourite part of The New Prophecy. It has a decent amount of The Tribe of Rushing Water. In the following book, Crowfeather’s love for Fetahertail overshadows it.
I know many people don’t like the tribe, especially in Power of Three and Omen of the Stars as it’s mostly filler in these books. But I love it. It feels like a new and exciting culture to explore, built on generations of tradition. I always enjoy learning about cultures like that.
If you’re not a fan of The Tribe of Rushing Water though, that’s fine too. To each their own as they say.
I’m pretty proud of how quickly I managed to read this book while working on an internship I’ve started. I stayed up late the first night reading this. I was very engaged. The next day, after lunch, I read the final chapter and the epilogue before sitting down to write the summary essay below.
Here is the summary essay for the second book in The New Prophecy arc, Moonrise.
Moonrise’s theme is keeping knowledge from others. When someone knows something, preventing it from others can be a burden, and make them feel guilty if their knowledge can ease another’s’ troubles or worries. Leafpaw feels this burden in keeping the knowledge of the first prophecy, and Tigerclaw’s heritage and plans to herself. At the end of the book, she decides to tell Firestar to relieve this. The tribe cats feel this same burden when they keep their prophecy about the silver cat, and sharp tooth’s existence, from the clan cats.
The main character’s in the story are the first three protagonists whose point of view Moonrise follows. They are Stormfur from RiverClan, Leafpaw from ThunderClan, and Brambleclaw from ThunderClan. The other travelling cats, Tawnypelt of ShadowClan, Crowpaw of WindClan, Feathertail of RiverClan, and Squirrelpaw of ThunderClan, along with the prey-hunter from The Tribe of rushing Water, Brook Where Small Fish Swim, are also main characters. All the other characters that appear in the book are minor or incidental.
The main situations are Midnight convinces the journeying cats to travel back through the mountains. Twolegs are destroying ThunderClan, ShadowClan, and WindClan’s territory. Cats start disappearing in the clans. The tribe try to keep Stormfur, but the travelling cats rescue him. Leafpaw learns that Hawkfrost intends to take ThunderClan’s territory. The travelling cats return to the tribe with a plan to kill sharp tooth. When it fails, Feathertail sacrifices herself, fulfilling the tribe’s prophecy. Leafpaw investigates the disappearing clan cats and twolegs capture her.
