Those of you who have been reading my blog for a while know that the first two books in SkyClan and the Stranger were the very first Warriors books I bought for my collection. They were the only two in the book shop at the time.
I didn't order the third book, After the Flood, until sometime later. It wasn't advertised in the other two SkyClan and the Stranger books, and, although I figured it existed, I thought it probably wasn't out yet.
It wasn't until I saw a copy in the library that I ordered it for myself.
It is the only manga I ordered and received after ordering part of the main series (The Prophecies Begin). I ordered the mangas first because, up till that point, the library hadn't gotten any in. To this day After the Flood remains the only manga they have. They don't even have the rest of SkyClan and the Stranger!
One thing that I noticed reading them this time around was something Erin Hunter writes in her letter to the readers. 'All over the world, communities struggle against natural disasters, from Hurricane Katrina in the U.S. to forest fires in Australia to devastating floods in Bangladesh.'
I think this passage stood out because of the fires this year that are still fresh in my mind. It's comforting to know others are aware of what happens every year, so thank you, Erin Hunter.
Now, here is the summary essay for the final manga series, SkyClan and the Stranger.
The central theme in SkyClan and the Stranger is following rules. Laws and rules are there to protect people. As a result, breaking the rules often carries a punishment. The Warrior Code is a set of laws in the graphic novels. The apprentices eat kittypet food and are punished by caring for the elders. Their rule-breaking causes Leafstar and her kits to be stolen. When Sol takes from foxes, the rule-breaking leads the foxes to the camp. When he steals Leafstar's kits, he betrays the whole clan, and SkyClan banishes him as punishment for breaking The Warrior Code.
There are two main characters in the story. The first is the protagonist, Leafstar, who narrates the story. The second is the antagonist, Sol, who first creates conflict between members of the clan through divided opinions about his trustworthiness and usefulness. He later breaks the warrior code by stealing from foxes, instead of learning and relying on his hunting skills. He betrays the entire clan in After the Flood by taking Leafstar's kits. All the other characters in SkyClan and the Stranger are minor or incidental.
The main situations in the graphic novel are: Some of the apprentices are missing on occasion. The clan learns they are eating kittypet food. The twoleg giving them the food spots Leafstar and steals her. The clan rescue Leafstar. Sol asks to join SkyClan. He brings back a lot of prey. It was taken from foxes as Leafstar learns. Sol begins to learn warrior skills. There is a flood in the gorge. Sol seems unwilling to help clean up. Leafstar's kits go missing. Sol goes looking for them every day until Shrewtooth learns he stole the kits. SkyClan banishes Sol. These are the main situations.
