This book must be my favourite manga, and possibly one of my favourite books in the whole series. Out of all the books I own, I’ve read The Rise of Scourge the most.
I have owned it for a long time, almost as long a the first two books in SkyClan and the Stranger. Even so, there are few books that I purchased later that I read as frequently.
One thing I notice that happens quite often when I am reading something, is I take on some small traits of the characters for a little while after.
During high school, there would be whole weeks where I would be thinking in Shakespearean while studying one of his plays. Another time I was reading a story where one character always said ‘def’ for definitely, so I started saying it too.
The Rise of Scourge is a graphic novel, so I am unlikely to start speaking like the characters. There are no real noticeable differences there anyway. One thing that does often happen is I start glaring as Scourge does for most of the book. Haha!
Here is the summary essay for The Rise Of Scourge.
The main them in The Rise of Scourge is revenge. Holding onto a desire for revenge can affect life negatively. Therein revenge in the book is Scourge wanting to kill Tigerstar for attacking him as a kitten. Thinking of this stops him from enjoying his success, and denies him happiness and satisfaction. Scourge also suggests he wants revenge on his siblings for their teasing and rejection of him. He takes this anger out on others through the cruel treatment of his cats, but this does not satisfy him, as it is not the cat he wants to hurt.
The main character in the graphic novel is the anti-hero, Scourge, who is introduced as Tiny and is the narrator of the story. There are no main antagonists in The Rise of Scourge. Instead, there are several minor ones. They are Scourge’s siblings, Socks and Ruby, and Tigerstar. All the characters in the book, other than Scourge himself are minor or incidental.
The main events in the story follow. Tiny is the smallest of his litter, and his siblings mistreat him. The cats go outside. Tiny sees and decides to visit the forest. His family don’t believe him when he tells them about it. Ruby says he’ll get thrown in the river and he runs away. He is attacked in the forest so goes to live in twoleg place. He pretends he fought and killed a dog. Other cats tell him to fight another dog or leave. The dog is frightened off by his shadow, and the other cats think he defeated it. As their new leader, Tigerstar comes to him seeking assistance. Scourge leads his cats to the forest and kills Tigerstar.
