Ravenpaw's Farewell - Summary Essay

I love this novella. Ravenpaw’s Farewell has so many sweet moments between Barley and Ravenpaw, including the part where Ravenpaw tells StarClan that he wants to stay in a place where he and Barley can be together forever after he dies.

I also love the moments where they comment on Riley and Bella together. They seem like two proud parents, and I’m so glad they will have somewhere they can stay with each other at the end.

Here is the summary essay for the final novella in the Shadows of The Clans collection, Ravenpaw’s Farewell.

Ravenpaw’s Farewell explores the idea of enduring identities. Identities that a group of people share, such as that of a school sports team, or country, can stay with a person, even if they leave the place where they feel they have this identity. This can be seen when they retain the ideals and values of that identity. Ravenpaw tells himself, and the other characters repeatedly that he is no longer a warrior. In the opening chapters, however, we see he still feels like a warrior inside. Later he shows the ideals of a warrior in his conviction and practice of the code. At the end of the novella, he confesses to Barley ‘“I have always been a warrior.”’ Pg 280.

The main characters in the story include the protagonist, Ravenpaw, who the audience follows on the journey. The main supporting character is Barley, whom Ravenpaw loves, and is his closest and oldest friend. The catalyst in the novella is Riley and Bella, who set the story into motion and send the. Characters on their journeys. All the other characters that appear in Ravenpaw’s Farewell play minor and incidental roles.

The main situations in the novella follow. Ravenpaw and Barley visit the forest. Ravenpaw and Barley meet Violet’s kits who what to be warriors. Two of Violet’s kits want Ravenpaw to train them. Ravenpaw decides to take the kits to SkyClan. Barley eventually agrees the kits should be able to choose their lives. SkyClan refuses to train the kits. SkyClan is having trouble with kittypets, and Ravenpaw gives them a solution. The travelling cats fight with SkyClan, and Leafstar offers Riley and Bella a place in her clan. Ravenpaw passes away. These are all the main situations included in the story.
