I have reached the end of all the books in the main warriors series that I own. Into the novellas, starting with Redtail’s Debt.
Redtail’s Debt explores the theme of trusting one’s instincts. Most everybody is aware of what their instincts, or gut feeling, is telling them when they experience it. This may be a danger, distrusts, or a general sense of wrongness tied to their conscience. Redtail experiences this feeling of wrongness several times throughout the novella. The first is when Tigerclaw tells him to attack a WindClan apprentice for accidentally straying across the border. Redtail senses it again when TigerClaw lies to Sunstar. He also experiences when fighting WindClan, and when Tigerclaw starts a fight with RiverClan.
There are two main characters in the novella. The first of these is the protagonist, Redtail, whose point of view we follow throughout the story. The other is the antagonist, Tigerclaw. All of the other characters that make an appearance in Redtail’s Debt are either minor or incidental.
The main incidents in the story are as follows: Redpaw is saved from a hack by Tigerclaw. Once Redpaw becomes Redtail, Tigerclaw continues to remind him of this debt. Tigerclaw uses this to convince Redtail to attack a WindClan apprentice and to not tell Sunstar the truth about what happened when he lies about it. At the gathering, Redtail promises the apprentice's mentor to tell Sunstar the truth, but Sunstar plans an attack on WindClan directly afterwards. When Bluefur is badly injured, and Redtail calls a retreat, Tigerclaw accuses him of cowardice. Tigerclaw starts a fight with RiverClan, and when Redtail confronts him, he kills him.
