The main theme in Thunder and Shadow is the bond of kinship, family, and friendship, and the strength of each. These are three things that most people experience in their life. Kin are those who share a blood relation. Family is who someone has chosen to live with. Friends are people someone doesn’t always live with and are not related to, but still, love, and share a strong bond with. Twigpaw is treated well by many cats in her family of ThunderClan. She cares deeply for her sister but feels she has to return with ThunderClan and leave Violetpaw. Violetpaw has only one friend in her family, which changes throughout the book, and feels unwanted. As a result, she is devastated when her sister, the only cat she is related to, leaves her.
The main characters in the book are Violetpaw and Alderpaw, whose point of view the story is told through, and Twigpaw, who helps to display the main theme of the book, and is the four of Alderpaw’s point of view. Other main characters include the rouge group, which changes throughout the book, Onestar, and the rest of WindClan, all of whom act as antagonists. The other characters are minor and incidental in Thunder and Shadow.
The main situations are: Needlepaw and Alderpaw let Twigkit and Violetkit meet in secret. Needlepaw takes Twigkit to meet the rouges. Several of the ShadowClan cats join the rouges. Violetpaw decides to return to ShadowClan. ShadowClan gets sick and Onestar refuses to give them the only cure. ShadowClan tries to hold Twigpaw for the cure. Kestrelflight and Harespring go against Onestar and give ShadowClan the cure. The rouges take over ShadowClan’s camp, and the three cats that don’t join them are offered a place in the ThunderClan camp until they can return. Twigpaw accepts that now that her sister is back with the rouges, she won’t get to see her. Alderpaw becomes Alderheart and has a vision confirming that the first prophecy is about SkyClan. These are all the main situations in Thunder and Shadow.
