The main theme in the bonus scene of A Forest Divided is life. Everyone strives to find meaning or purpose in life, their reason for carrying on living. Slate says that, because the rest of their family died, she and Cricket only have each other, so her purpose is being there for him. After cricket dies, Slate has ‘…no interest in staying alive.' [and thinks] What could the world possibly have to offer me now?’ Pg 8. After meeting Wind Runner, she finds unconsciousness less alluring. When she finds a new reason to live, Slate ‘…realise[s] why she didn’t let herself die on the moor…’ pg 19, showing how important meaning in life is. She also unknowingly gives her life a second meaning when she befriends the other characters and wants to become part of their group.
The main characters in the bonus scene of A Forest Divided include the protagonist, Slate; the group leader, Wind Runner; and the main antagonist of the story, the fox. The other members of Wind Runners Group and Cloud Spots are all minor and incidental characters.
The main situations in the story are as follows. Slate and her brother, Cricket, are on the moor when they come across a fox. Gorse Fur finds Slate after she passes out from loss of blood, and Cricket has been killed. Slate meets Wind Runner, and her kits, before Cloud Spots comes to heal her. Once mostly healed, Slate asks to go with Wind Runner to kill the fox. Slate’s wound reopens, and Wind Runner drags her back to camp. When Slate wakes up, Wind Runner and Gorse Fur invite her to join their group, and she accepts.
