A Forest Divided - Summary

Here is the summary essay for the fifth book in the Dawn Of The Clans arc, A Forest Divided.

The main theme in A Forest Divided is withholding information. There are many reasons someone might choose to withhold information. In the book, the reasoning of wanting to protect someone from the truth, and the problems this causes is explored. Grey Wing does not want to ruin Tall Shadow’s feeling of a perfect new home, so doesn’t tell her about Slash or his spy, even when he leaves Tall Shadow’s group, putting them in danger. Thunder doesn’t want Grey Wing to know how badly he and his father are split, so doesn’t tell him what happened after they fought. Later, Grey Wing doesn’t understand Thunder’s aversion to seeing his father. Quiet Rain’s three sons and Thunder don’t want her to know about the battle. She sees that they aren’t telling her everything, and the strong emotion of anger further weakens her.

The three main protagonists in A Forest Divided are Grey Wing, Thunder, and Clear Sky. Clear Sky also acts as an antagonist. All other antagonists the protagonists have to deal with or overcome, and other characters in the book, are minor or incidental.

The main incidents in the book are Clear Sky tries to convince all the cats to live in one group in the forest. The moor cats split up and leave the hollow. Grey wing overhears Slash telling Fern to spy on Tall Shadow’s group. After confronting Fern, Grey Wing stays in Wind Runners camp for several days. Thunder fights with Clear Sky, and leaves his group to start his own. Thunder finds Sun Shadow and Quiet Rain, and brings them to Tall Shadow’s group. Thunder brings Grey Wing and Clear Sky to see their mother. Quiet Rain dies from a fever caused by an infection. Grey Wing joins Wind Runner’s group.
