This is the summary essay for the third book in the fifth arc, Dawn Of The Clans, The First Battle.
The main theme in the first battle is fear. Fear governs many of the characters actions throughout the story. Tall Shadow comments that cats are driven by two things, fear and greed. Many of the moor cats fear that Clear Sky will attack them, despite what methods they take to avoid battle, and so they begin training to fight. Clear Sky also fears Grey Wing will attack him, and so trains his cats to fight. He sets a trap for Grey Wing, when he sets up a meeting to try and settle things peacefully by talking. Clear Sky continues to expand his territory, as he still fears hunger from is time in the mountains, which he explains to Storm’s ghost at the end of the book.
The main characters in the first battle are the protagonists, Grey Wing and Thunder, the leader of the moor cats, Tall Shadow, and the main antagonist, and leader of the forest cats, Clear Sky. All the other characters in the book are only minor or incidental for the story line of The First Battle alone.
The main situations are: Both groups of cats are training for battle fearing the other group will attack. The kittypet, Tom, steals Turtle Tails kits. The moor cats steal the kits back, and Turtle Tail dies in the process. Grey Wing arranges to meet with Clear Sky, on neutral ground, to talk about borders. Clear Sky gets his cats to attack Grey Wing at the talk. The ghosts of every cat who has died since the mountain cats arrived appear to deliver the message that all the cats living wild in the area must unite.
