As promised, here is the summary essay for the bonus scene at the end of The Sun Trail. While writing the summary essays for this series, every fortnight I will be doing the summary essay of the bonus scene from the book I looked at the week before.
The main theme of the bonus scene is strength in numbers. The main character, Petal, is always better equipped in life when she is with other cats. In the first scene we see a single she-cat, who was killed fighting a badger alone. Her two kits comment on how hard it will be for them to survive without her. In chapter two, Petal catches two mice with ease, with the help of her brother, Fox, but when she goes after a robin alone, she loses it twice. In the final chapter, when she falls in the river, her brother fails to save her, but other cats come to rescue her. Clear Sky comments the two siblings ‘“will need the protection of a group,”’ (Page 20) and after agreeing to join Clear Sky’s group Petal thinks ‘I’m pretty sure that in the future no cat will be able to push me around,’ (Page 20) reinforcing the message that the cats are stronger together.
As the bonus scene is very short - only three chapters long - it only has one main character. This is the she-cat Petal. Although her brother is always present, we see the world through Petal’s eyes, and hear her thoughts. She is also the one who drives the story forward. Fox only plays a supporting role. The other characters play other supporting and minor roles.
The main situations in the bonus scene are: For and Petal are orphaned when a badger kills their mother. They are chased away by other cats when they ask for help and try to hunt. They learn to hunt, and Petal insists they always make catches together. They run from the mountain cats, and Petal falls into the river. Clear Sky saves her, and she and her brother decide to join his group.
