Spottedleaf's Heart - Summary

This is the summary easy for Spottedleaf’s Heart, the first novella in the collection Legends of the Clans.

The main theme in Spottedleaf’s Heart is seeing the truth, despite what your heart feels. The saying ‘love is blind’ refers to personality traits, as much a physical ones. This can be dangerous. Spottedpaw overlooks Thistleclaw’s vicious nature because she loves him. Even when she learns he is training in the Dark Forest, she gives him a second chance to show her it’s just training. Only when she sees him kill a cat, does she admit to herself what he’s really like. Bluefur knows what he is like, and fears him becoming deputy. She almost lets him, because of her love for her kits. She feels that as long as she can raise them, everything will be okay.
There are two main characters in this novella. The first is the protagonist, Spottedleaf, whose point of view we are told the story through. The second is Thistleclaw, who plays the role of the protagonist in Spottedleaf’s Heart. All the other characters seen throughout this novella only play minor or incidental roles in the story.
The main incidents in the story are: Spottedkit plays at being a leader. Spottedleaf and her littermates are made apprentices. Thistleclaw jokes with her, while she tours the territory. Spottedpaw sees him let his apprentice attack a kitten, and Spottedpaw wonders if the kitten would have been killed if Bluefur wasn’t there. Thistleclaw takes Spottedpaw to the Dark Forest to see him train, and she is horrified when she finds out where she is. Spottedpaw runs away from training after Thistleclaw tells her to slash her clanmate's eyes. Goosefeather tells her her ‘heart…is blind’. Spottedpaw realises that Thistleclaw won’t change, and becomes a medicine cat.
